Justice League: 100 Greatest Moments celebrates the exploits of these champions of justice with 100 of their greatest moments—selected by those who wrote or edited their adventures—in one handsome volume.
In the hands of dozens of writers and artists, DC Comics Justice League of America (JLA) has experienced moments that can be intensely personal or of great cosmic importance. The comic’s ability to shift in tone has always kept the team interesting and reflects the changing tastes among the readers and the times when each moment occurred. The Justice League, the team also known as the World’s Greatest Super-Heroes, have flowered and foundered, seen their ranks swell and shrink, and risen and fallen in sales popularity, but remaining a fixture in pop cultures for decades.
What you will see on the pages that follow are one hundred of the greatest moments, each one a piece of the mosaic that is the Justice League. From their first rallying issue to the League finally reaching the big screen in the 2017 feature film Justice League, the members and their stories has remained entertaining for readers and watchers .
The selections of iconic comic moments to come were not chosen in a vacuum. Moments chosen consist of nominations from various fan groups as well as former JLA scribes Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, J.M. DeMatteis, Bob Rozakis, Gerry Conway, Marv Wolfman and former DC editors Michael Eury and KC Carlson. Ace researcher and comics historian John Wells and current JLA editor Brian Cunningham also offered input on the most contemporary selections.

INTRODUCTION
When continuing characters became predominant in comic books, each series stood on its own. The idea of characters from multiple series interacting wasn’t on anyone’s mind, largely because each creator controlled his own series and the notion of a shared universe was an entirely alien one. The rare crossovers that did take place in comic books of the late 1930s involved minor backup characters, before MLJ, known today as Archie Comics, started having its heroes interact in the early months of 1940.
THE MEMBERSHIP
At first, membership in the League was pretty basic. Julie Schwartz’s rule for writer Gardner Fox was to include all heroes who had their own series. In 1960, that meant Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman (then running in Adventure Comics), Green Arrow (World’s Finest), Martian Manhunter (Detective), the Flash, and Green Lantern.
And yet, Green Arrow was missing from the League’s debut appearance in The Brave and the Bold #28 (1960). No one is certain why: whether it was an oversight or creative determination that the Emerald Archer was too low-powered a hero to keep up with the others. Once the team was awarded their own title, he became the first member to be inducted, in issue #4.
Justice League International #12, October 2012 Artists: David Finch & Richard Friend
Self-sacrifice is nothing new to the team as many members have laid down their lives in the name of Good. Rocket Red made the ultimate sacrifice at the end of the Breakdown storyline in Justice League International #12.
Justice League vs. Suicide Squad #5, March 2017 Writer: Joshua Williamson Artists: Robson Rocha, Jay Leisten, Daniel Henriques, Sandu Florea, & Oclair Albert
Desperate times call for desperate measures and when a greater threat than the Suicide Squad reared its ugly head, Batman did what needed to be done and welcomed his archnemesis Deadshot, the unpredictable Harley Quinn, the deadly Killer Frost, dangerous Killer Croc, immoral Captain Boomerang, and all-around bastich Lobo to the Justice League. It didn’t last.
Justice League United #10, May 2015 Writer: Jeff Lemire Artists: Neil Edwards & Jay Leisten
The Infinitus Saga used classic characters in shocking new ways as the shape-changing Thanagarian Byth tinkered with an alien called Ultra, who was destined to evolve into the cosmic threat called Infinitus and destroy the 31st Century, prompting the Legion of Super Heroes to partner with contemporary heroes in Justice League United #10 to prevent that from happening.
